Getting started

Open Back Pocket

Click its button in Chrome’s toolbar: it opens in the side panel, beside the page you are reading. For a tab of its own, choose Full page at the top. Alt+Shift+K opens it too.

Keep its button in the toolbar

Chrome puts a new extension under the puzzle piece in its toolbar. Click the puzzle piece, then the pin beside Back Pocket.

Save your first group

  1. In Open now, find a tab group.
  2. Choose Save.
  3. It appears in Saved with its name, colour and every tab’s Back history.

Saving

Save a group, a tab, or everything

Save on a group; the save button on a tab’s row; or Save all under Actions. From any page: right-click it, then Save this tab to Back Pocket, or press Alt+Shift+S.

Save a group and close it

A group’s ⋯ menu, then Save & close. Its tabs close and free their memory.

Keep a group in step

A group you save or restore stays linked to its saved copy while it is open. Add, close or browse its tabs in Chrome and the saved group follows by itself; change the saved group and the open tabs follow.

Restoring

Restore a group

Restore on a saved group. It comes back as a real Chrome group, with its name and colour. Its tabs load when you click them; turn that off in ⚙ with Load tabs only when opened.

Restore with history

Restore with history also gives every tab its Back pages, so Back goes where it went before. A long trail takes a few seconds, and Chrome shows a bar while it works.

Restore in a new window

A saved group’s ⋯ menu, then Restore in a new window. The window you are in stays as it was.

History

Recording each tab’s history

On from the start: each tab’s Back and Forward pages are kept as you browse, up to 50 a tab, until you close the tab. Switch it off in ⚙ with Record history, and what was recorded is forgotten.

Tabs that were open before Back Pocket

Read history under Actions reads their Back pages from Chrome, once.

Why does Chrome say “Back Pocket started debugging this browser”?

Chrome shows this bar while Back Pocket reads or restores a tab’s history, and it goes away when done. Back Pocket never reads what is on a page.

Finding and tidying

Find any tab

Press / and type. It searches every tab’s name and link, and every page in its history.

Duplicates

The same link, or the same name, gets a Duplicate label in its own colour. Click the label to compare them side by side, then Keep only this, or They’re different.

Several tabs at once

Ctrl+click tabs to select them, or Shift+click for a run. The bar at the bottom saves, bookmarks, pins, moves or closes them all.

Undo

After every change, Undo in the message puts it back.

Bookmarks and backups

Bring in a bookmark folder

Import, then From Chrome bookmarks…, and choose a folder. It becomes a saved group of the same name.

Save a group as bookmarks

A group’s ⋯ menu, then Save to Chrome bookmarks. It goes into Other bookmarks › Back Pocket; saving again adds only what is new.

Keep a copy of everything

Export, then a backup file. Import brings it back, on this computer or another.

Sync and Pro

Turn on sync

Click your account picture, then Turn on Google Drive sync. Your saved groups go to your own Google Drive, and every computer signed in to the same Google account gets them. Sync is part of Back Pocket Pro.

Go back to an earlier day

Your account picture, then Backups…, and Restore on a day. With Pro, a backup is kept every day for 30 days.

Put tabs to sleep

The moon on a tab’s row, or Sleep other tabs, frees memory and keeps the tab in its place. To let unused tabs sleep by themselves: ⚙, then Tab sleep. Part of Back Pocket Pro.

Manage or cancel your plan

Your account picture, then Back Pocket Pro, then Manage plan; or the link in Polar’s receipt email. A yearly plan keeps working until the year you paid for ends.

When something is not working

The account menu says “Sync problem”

Chrome is not signed in to a Google account, or Back Pocket’s access was taken away. Sign in to Chrome, then Turn on Google Drive sync again.

In Edge, Google asks me to sign in again

Stay signed in to Google in Edge, and it stops asking.

The account menu says “Sync: paused”

Your Pro plan has ended. Your plan in the account menu says when, and how to get it back.

A restored tab says “This page is no longer known”

Restore the group again from Saved.

Back Pocket’s tabs closed by themselves

Chrome closes an extension’s tabs when it updates it. Back Pocket opens them again where they were.

Can it see the groups Chrome has saved and closed?

No extension can. Reopen one from Chrome’s Tab groups menu and Back Pocket sees it at once.

Which browsers does it work in?

Google Chrome, version 121 or later, and Microsoft Edge, both installed from the Chrome Web Store; sign-in and sync work in both. It is built and tested on Windows. Brave, Opera and Vivaldi can install it from the Store too, but it has not been tested there yet.
