Back Pocket
A Chrome extension

Put tab groups away. Get them back with the Back button working.

Back Pocket saves your Chrome tab groups with every tab's Back history. Close them today, reopen them next month as real groups, and each tab still goes Back to where it came from.

Everything a tab was, kept

Chrome can save a group, but not where its tabs have been. Back Pocket keeps both.

Keeps the Back history

Reads each tab's Back and Forward pages straight from Chrome, up to 50 a tab, even from tabs Chrome has put to sleep, without waking them.

Reopens real groups

Name and colour come back as they were. Choose Open with history and every tab's Back button works as it did before you closed it.

Light until you need it

Tabs can come back as lightweight placeholders that load the first time you click them, so reopening a hundred tabs costs almost nothing.

Duplicates marked, never blocked

The same link, the same title, or a title one letter off gets its own colour. Compare a set side by side and keep the one you want.

On every computer, in your own Drive

Turn on sync and your saved groups follow you between computers through a hidden folder in your own Google Drive. There is no Back Pocket server.

Drag, drop, pin, undo

Move tabs between groups and windows, pin and unpin them, and undo any change you didn't mean.

How it works

  1. Save a group

Click Save on any tab group. Back Pocket reads where each tab has been, so you can close the tabs and free the memory.

  2. Keep it as long as you like

Saved groups stay in Chrome on your computer, and in your own Google Drive if you turn on sync. Keep as many as you like.

  3. Open it again

It comes back as a real Chrome group. Tabs load when you click them, and Back goes where it went before.

Your tabs stay yours

A tab manager sees where you have been. That is exactly why Back Pocket has nowhere to send it.

  • No server, no sign-up, no analytics.Back Pocket works inside your Chrome. Its developer never receives your tabs, your history or anything else.
  • Sync is off until you turn it on.Then your saved groups go to one place only: a hidden folder in your Google Drive that Back Pocket alone can open. It cannot see your files.
  • History is read only when you ask. When you save a group, press Read history, or open a group with its history. Never in the background, and never what is on the pages.

Questions

Why does Chrome say "Back Pocket started debugging this browser"?

Chrome lets an extension read or rebuild a tab's history only through its debugging interface, and it shows that bar whenever one does. It appears while Back Pocket reads or rebuilds history and goes away when it is done. Back Pocket uses it only for each tab's list of pages, never to read what is on them.

Can it see the groups Chrome has saved and closed?

No. Chrome doesn't let any extension see those. Reopen one from Chrome's Tab groups menu and Back Pocket sees it straight away; Save & close then keeps it in Back Pocket, history and all.

Does opening a group with history load every page?

Yes. Chrome has no way to hand a tab its history, so Back Pocket steps the tab through its pages in order and stops on the one you were reading. A long trail takes a few seconds. Opening without history is quick.

Which browsers does it work in?

Google Chrome, version 120 or later. It is built and tested on Chrome for Windows.

What happens to my groups if I remove it?

Chrome deletes everything Back Pocket kept on your computer. If sync was on, the copy in your Google Drive stays until you delete it. To keep your groups, use Export first; Import brings them back.
